All sci-fi
serials require a square-jawed hero and, here, that role if filled by Jack
Sully (Sam Worthington), a crippled ex-Marine who is dispatched to a mining
colony on Pandora to participate in the Avatar program, where his
consciousness is downloaded into a lab-grown Na’vi body. The scientists who
run the program, include Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver), intend for
him to be an agent of peace, but the outpost’s military commander, Colonel
Miles Quaritch tasked (Stephen Lang), has other plans. Apparently, a Na’vi
tribal is residing on top of one of Pandora’s largest deposit of Unobtanium
and the corporation that oversees the mining efforts want them gone. Sully is
tasked with infiltrating the tribe in the guise of his alien avatar and
gaining their trust, all the while assessing their strengths and weakness for
a possible invasion.
LIKE George Lucas, Cameron is one of those writer-directors who
would benefit from passing the writing chores off to another party and yet
stubbornly continues to pen his screenplays himself. On the whole, the dialog
in Avatar is far less turgid than what moviegoers endured in the star wars
prequels, but the script still contains its fair share of clunkers. Of
course, the case could be made that cheesy dialog in another important part
of the sci-fi pulp tradition. Besides, subtlety and nuance have never been
among Cameron’s strength; whether its action, romance or comedy, he cannot
help but go big and broad. Avatar, like Titanic before it, may inspire
occasional fits of giggling and eye-rolling.
It doesn’t hurt
that Cameron remains one of the best action shooters in the business; the
film climaxes with a sustained battle sequence that last almost 40 minutes
and is truly a wonder to be hold. Scene like this one are guaranteed to hook
general audiences, but in the end perhaps only sci-fi fans will be able to
fully appreciate what Cameron has achieved with Avatar.

Pyramid is a
very large structure with four sides. Each side is shaped like a triangle and
the four sides merge to form a single point on top.

built in many parts of the world but the most famous are located in Egypt.
More than four thousands ago, an Egyptian pharaoh or king, named Zoser had
the first pyramid build. It was a burial tomb for him when he died. Up to his

Multimedia
artist, Yoko Ono was born on February 18, 1933, in Tokyo, the eldest of three
children born to Eisuke and Isoko, a wealthy aristocratic family. In 1940, the
family moved to New York, then back to Japan 1941 when her father transfer to
Hanoi on the eve of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Ono remained in Tokyo
through World War II, including the great-fire bombing of 1945. At age of 18,
Ono moved with her parents to Scarsdale, New York. She studied at Sarah
Lawrence College, but left to elope with her first husband Toshi Ichiyago.
Settling in
Greenwich Village, she developed her interest in arts and also began writing
poetry. Considered too radical by many people, her work was not well received
but she gained recognition after working with American Jazz musician/film
producer Antony Cox, who later became her second husband. Cox financed and
helped coordinate her “interactive conceptual events” in the early 1960s.
Ono first met
John Lennon of the first English rock band ‘The Beatles’ in November 9, 1966,
when he visited a preview of her exhibition at the Indica Gallery in London. He
was taken with the positive, interactive nature of her work. He especially
cited a ladder leading up to a black canvas with a spyglass on a chain, which
revealed the word “yes” written on the ceiling. They began an affair
approximately 18 months later. Lennon divorced his first wife, Cynthia, (they
had a son Julian) and married Ono on March 20, 1969.
The couple
collaborated on art, film and musical projects, and became famous for their
series of ‘conceptual event’ to promote world peace, including the ‘bed-in’
held in Amsterdam hotel room during their honeymoon in 1969.

The air
traffic control system
How does air
traffic control actually work, and how does a plane get safety from point A to
point B? The system is a complex combination of radar, computers, and radio
transmitters. And of course is just as important.
For this reason
English has become the common language of air traffic control. All passenger
and military flying in the United States are required to present to Central
Flow Control (CFC) a proposed itinerary of exactly of how they intend to fly
from one airport to another. Although complex, the flight plan is similar to an
itinerary you might draw up for a road trip, although this one includes not
only direction, but altitude and speed as well. The amount of fuel that will be
used is calculated as accurately as possible too. The plan is then approved and
overseen by air traffic control.
Air traffic
controllers- the people you see on movies who sit in a darkened room hunched
over a computer monitor- are also responsible for maintaining a safe distance
between planes in the air. Controllers also must direct the planes that air
coming in to land to a particular point in the sky so they can land at a
specific time-these “time slots” are especially important at a busy airport
such as New York’s JFK where planes every minute or so.
The control tower
which is seen at airport is mostly just responsible for instructing the pilot
which runway to use and when to take off and land. Most aviation accidents
happen at take off or landing, so the task of guiding the plane through the
maze of taxiways and runways at the airport is just essential as guiding it
while airborne.
29. What is one of the things drawn up in the flight plane?

THE NOTEBOOK
Nicholas Sparks
Warner Books
When author
Nicholas Sparks sat down to write The Notebook, a tender love story by enduring
relationship of his wife Cathy’s grandparents, he wanted his readers to walk
away with a renewed spirit of hope.
“I’ll never
forget watching those two people flirt,” he recalls. “I meant, you don’t see
that see that very often. They’d been married 67 years, and yet they still
loved each other. I wanted to write a book about that kind of love. I wanted
people to know that unconditional love does exist.”
So Sparks created
The Notebook, the simple story of Noah Calhoun, a soft spoken North Carolina
outdoorsman who carried his love for the willowy Allie Nelson with him long
after their youthful romance had ended. He paralleled Noah’s silent passions
with Allie’s haunting thoughts-feeling she could not escape even after she
became engaged to another man. He asked his readers to consider what it might
mean if these relatively happy, middle-aged people found their destinies once
again overlapped.
He presented a
question all but universal in appeal: what would happen if two people were
given a second chance at the love of a lifetime?
Sparks deftly
answers that question. But it’s the inspiration drawn from his real life
grandparents that makes the Notebook more than just a novel of flamed
reignited. The novel opens and closes with an elderly Noah Calhoun reading
aloud from his personal journals and “notebook.” And as he shares the delicate
details, the good with the bad, its clear he is as enchanted with Allie in old
age as he was on the first day they met.
“And that’s the
legacy of The Notebook,” according to Nicholas Sparks. “When love is real, it
doesn’t matter that turns the road takes. When love is real, the joys and
possibilities are endless.”
36. What is highlighted by the Notebook?
A. Love is blind B. Unconditional love exists
C. A youthful
romance lasts D. Mature love
is unconditional
E. Love can be
very simple
37. In his old age Noah feels that Allie’s…..never faded away as
he met her the first time.

38. What does the author say about real love in the last
paragraph?
